Introduction

Spicy Shrimp Saganaki is the bold, vibrant cousin of the traditional Greek version. It has the same irresistible tomato-feta base but with an exciting kick of chilli, garlic, and warm spices. The flavours are rich, comforting, and layered  all coming together in one sizzling pan.

Perfect as a meze dish, a weekend appetiser, or a main with crusty bread or rice, this recipe brings the Mediterranean coastline straight to your kitchen. It’s quick, full of flavour, and guaranteed to impress.

Instructions

1. Prepare the shrimp:

    • Toss shrimp with olive oil, salt, pepper, and smoked paprika. Set aside.

2. Cook the aromatics:

    • Heat olive oil in a saganaki pan. Add onions and cook 3–4 minutes until soft.
    • Add garlic, chilli, chilli flakes, smoked paprika, and cumin. Sauté for 1 minute.

3. Add tomatoes:

    • Stir in chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, and sugar. Season with salt and pepper.
    • Simmer for 10 minutes until slightly thickened.
    • *Optional:* Add a splash of ouzo and let it bubble for 1 minute.

4. Add the shrimp:

    • Nestle shrimp into the sauce and cook for 3–4 minutes per side until pink and cooked through.

5. Add feta:

    • Scatter feta over the top. Let it soften and melt slightly into the sauce.

6. Serve:

    • Remove from heat and garnish with fresh parsley.
    • Enjoy with crusty bread, pita, or rice.

Tips

  • Don’t overcook the shrimp — they turn rubbery if left too long.
  • Add extra chilli flakes for a real kick.
  • Use firm Greek feta for best results.
  • A drizzle of olive oil before serving enhances richness.
  • Pairs beautifully with ouzo or white wine.
